you appeared before me,
like a fleeting vision,
like a genius of pure beauty.
In the lethargy of hopeless melancholy,
in the anxiety of noisy frivolousness,

and I would dream of your dear face.
Years passed. The surge of restless tempests
dispelled my former dreams;
and I forgot your tender voice,
your divine features.
In isolation, in the gloom of confinement,
my days passed slowly and quietly,
without divinity, without inspiration,
without tears, without life, without love.
