What is the difference between Linux Mint mate and cinnamon?

Cinnamon and MATE are two different desktop environments. MATE is trying to keep the GNOME2 desktop alive by forking it and offering the same old traditional desktop experience. Cinnamon desktop is developed by the Linux Mint team. They have specific goals to make the best desktop Linux experience with traditional look and feel with an admixture of beauty and modern interface. 
If you've a moderate hardware configuration, then try MATE. 
If your hardware configuration is good enough, then go with the Cinnamon to get the most out of Linux with ease of use. 
I prefer Cinnamon. It would be De Facto Linux desktop environment-I'm telling you!
